           Summary: Kernel does not manage my IDE controller properly.
    Kernel Version: 2.6.10
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
             Owner: bzolnier at elka.pw.edu.pl
         Submitter: dvgevers at xs4all.nl

Distribution: Mandrakelinux 10.2 Cooker updated upto today

Hardware Environment: Intel chipset  82440 BX AGP, on Soyo SY-6BB mainboard;
Pentium II @ 350 Mhz (more details below)

Software Environment: GNU/Linux.

Problem Description/Steps to reproduce:
Normally I have no problems with this box.

Since appearance of haldaemon for managing disks I find I do have a problem with
the IDE controller as of last November:

sonypi: Intel Corp.|82371AB PIIX4 ACPI - Bus Master IDE Controller
[BRIDGE_OTHER] (vendor:8086 device:7113)

When I start /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes in runlevel 1 I can see it
running okay (and it rewrites my fstab with fstab-sync,
I can find later), until it freezes my system moments later and the system must
be reset. The verbose output ends with following lines:

quote
Error sending msg: No property info.category on device with id
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/ide_2_0
Releasing advisory lock on /etc/fstab
Lock released
fstab-sync exiting; add
udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_866be941-97f7-4f5c-8a77-0283a694f6fe
###################################
[I] callout.c: 173 Child pid 27677 terminated
[I] hald.c.81: Added device to GDL;
udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_866be941-97f7-4f5c-8a77-0283a694f6fe
[I] linux/osspec.c:795: handling /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:07.3 pci
unquote

Also, when I go into the directory shown in the last line and (as root) give the
command 'cat config', this completely
freezes my system. (When I do this as user, it does not occur).

This freeze does not occur if I cat any other file in /sys.

Upon suggestion of other Mandrakelinux users I moved
/lib/modules/2.6.10-3mdk/kernel/drivers/char/sonypi.ko.gz away to /tmp
and ran the command 'depmod'. A subsequent 'cat
/lib/modules/2.6.10-3mdk/modules.dep |grep sonypi did not list
sonypi.ko.gz anymore. However, after that hald gave the same freeze still. Even
rebooting into the same settings made no
difference.

Also, I tried with "acpi=off"; the result was again the same. I tried several
times in runlevel 1 with all services off (except messagebus)
but also with the same result.

Furthermore, I tried the latest multimedia kernel available in Mandrake Cooker
(kernel-multimedia-2.6.10-1.mm.18mdk-1-1mdk) and the result was again the same.

I tried outputting the hald verbosity to file, but this failed. I tried to get a
trace with of alt-sysrq-p and alt-sysrq-t, but this also failed.
Also, I tried to 'strace' the process, but the output file remained empty.
