Summary: SATA drive on atiixp chipset (Pundit-R), only runs UDMA2
    Kernel Version: 2.6.8-24 (SuSE 9.2 default), 2.6.10 (Vanilla), 2.6.11.5
                    (Vanilla
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
             Owner: jgarzik at pobox.com
         Submitter: anders at pier.dk

Distribution:
SuSE 9.2 (FTP and DVD install)

Hardware Environment:
Asus Pundit-R, with 1003 BIOS (latest released).
- 512MB Kingston RAM
- 160GB Seagate SATA drive (ST3160827AS) on SATA connector.
- NEC 3520A Dual Layer DVD Burner on Master IDE (Secondary disabled).
(BIOS does NOT allow for choosing modes for the SATA connector/controller).

Software Environment:
SuSE 9.2 - with default 2.6.8-24 kernel from SuSE and Vanilla Kernels:
2.6.10, 2.6.11.5 and 2.6.12-rc1

Problem Description:
SATA drive will only run UDMA2, even though this is capable of running UDMA6.
(tried with hdparm -d1 -X70 /dev/hdc)

hdparm is not even able to switch drive to PIO mode !!! The drive does not
respond to hdparm commands, but does NOT give any errors either (e.g. hdparm -
X70 /dev/hdc).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install SuSE 9.2 with default kernel or one of the above vanilla kernels (on
similar hardware, hence atiixp chipset with device id 4349 IDE interface and
SATA disk).

2. hdparm -X70 /dev/hdc

3. hdparm -i /dev/hdc (only allows you to run UDMA2, even though hdparm -
I /dev/hdc shows UDMA6). Also hdparm -tT /dev/hdc gives very poor performance
for buffered diskreads.
