That's the case, as the old PPDs require cupsomatic as filter and not 
foomatic-rip. In addition, the old 2.x PPDs are not fully Adobe 
compliant and therefore do not work with CUPS 1.1.19 or newer.

There are two solutions:

1. (CUPS 1.1.18 and older only) Set the link

ln -s /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip /usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic

2. (all CUPS versions): Get the current PPD files from linuxprinting.org.

The latter solution is also recommended for older CUPS versions to get 
better compatibility with PPD-aware applications (as OpenOffice.org) or 
clients (Windows, Mac).
