[Foomatic] Xtra pages with Print Server SMC Barricade

Hi have a problem with extra blank pages being ejected from our HP laserjer
4l after each print job.

We just got a Barricade SMC7004ABR router print server. We set it up no
problem and got the printer working also.

I was able to set up the printer on our two Macs (OS X Unix 10.3) using the
Printer Set-up Utility under IP printing and CUPS/Gimp driver for the HP
Laserjet 4L. Very simple and straight forward. The thing is that every time
a print job finishes an extra blank sheet of paper gets spooled out as
well.
I set up our old Win 95 PC as well for the router printing and I noticed
that the manual recommends un-checking the print test page option. The PC
prints jobs without the extra blank page. The PC also never portrayed
this
extra page behaviour when it acted as the print server for the Macs prior
to
the Barricade router.

Apparently according to SMC this Problem appears under Windows when LPR
BYTE COUNTING is enabled. It supposedly can be deactivated in Windows but
there does not seem to be such an option in the more minimal Mac Printer
Setup Utility or anywhere else under Mac OS X 10.3.

I also tried HP's hpijs-foomatic drivers. Initially it printed 1 blank page
for a 1 page document. I then installed the ESP Ghost script, as
recommended, but things reverted to form i.e. printing the page but with an
extra blank page afterwards.

I am not sure if these are the only possible causes of the extra page. I
notice that in the Properties panel for the HP4L on the Win 95 machine that
there is an option to create seperator pages between jobs?

It is a waste of paper (the A4 sheets can't be loaded back into the
printer without jamming up in the works). We intended retiring the PC when
the laser was attached to the SMC router print server. Can it be fixed?
