The best would be to have a Foomatic DB entry (printer XML file) for
each manufacturer PPD file. I was already thinking about whether one
could make a script to automatically generate such DB entries, as the
PPD files should contain all info (make and model, maximum resolution,
..). The comment field will then have a remark that the entry was
generated automatically and is not reviewed yet. The rating will be
"Perfectly" as a PostScript with manufacturer PPD is fully working (or
perhaps better "Mostly", as some devices can contain a scanner or fax
which is not supported). The script should not overwrite existing XML
files and it should let the XML containing a link to the PPD, so that
the user will download the original PPD and not a generic Foomatic PPD.
I am naturally grateful if someone could contribute such a script.

The above-mentioned script could also extract the IEEE IDs and fill them
into the appropriate XML fields ...
