Summary: ATAPI TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-N216 freezes on 2.6 kernels
    Kernel Version: 2.6.16
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
             Owner: bzolnier at gmail.com
         Submitter: vladc6 at yahoo.com

Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: 2.4.20 (Red Hat 9)

Distribution: Debian Sid (2.6.16-2-686), SUSE 10.1, Kubuntu 6.06

Hardware Environment: Dell Inspiron 3200 laptop (Pentium II)
    ATAPI TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-N216

Software Environment: Debian Sid (2.6.16-2-686)

Problem Description: I am not able to mount any CDs from Linux 2.6.16 because
the drive (ATAPI TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-N216) freezes. The kernel log containing
the boot messages and the messages from the CD reading errors is attached. The
CD reading errors start on line 850. The command that triggered the errors was:

mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom

Interestingly, Red Hat 9, which uses kernel 2.4.20, *can* mount and read from
the CD. This leads me to believe that the error entered somewhere in the 2.6 branch.

Windows 98 doesn’t have any problems accessing CDs from this drive. CD-based
installations of Kununtu 6.06 and SUSE 10.1 all fail when the kernel tries to
mount the CD -- that’s why I had to install the latest Debian from floppy. Once
the CD is blocked, the only way to unblock it is to power off the laptop -- warm
reboots don’t unblock it.

I’d be happy to provide any other information and to test patches.

Thank you.

Steps to reproduce: Run "mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom"
