Sorry, I saw some words talking about "MimeType=image/png" and assumed a 
file.  Given a GdKPixbuf or GdkPixmap (or the equivalent Qt object), 
hopefully it will be easy to construct the required data.

Where did you read that? 

Your question was about the image format and you explicitly mentioned a 
perceived dependency on X11 formats. This is in no way related to either 
image storage (like in a file, database or memory ) nor image transport 
(file, memory, SYS V Shared memory, network data stream,...)
