What Does Open Source Need for Mainstream Desktop?

http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/02/189240

Topics covered include:

      * Ability to run MS applications (all of them!)
      * Some killer open source apps not available in distributions yet
        (i.e. Beagle, Tomboy, etc.)
      * Single installation method for apps.
      * Not playing "keep up" with MS, but providing a more usable
        experience. MAC OS fanatics chiming in. All the innovate
        rather than copy arguments.
      * Wireless support (goes into the whole laptop and mobile
        professional issues)
      * Linux not provided pre-packaged. Vendors fear MS.
      * Support for popular games
      * Lack of proper advertisement. The strength of the Linux desktop
        is thousands of free apps.
      * Advertising: "Grandma does know about Linux"
      * Distros need to cooperate and consolidate
      * Drivers, drivers, drivers
      * IT/engineers have built their careers around Windows
      * Much more...
