A quick plug for the Desktop Developers Conference (DDC) and the Ottawa
Linux Symposium (OLS), two back-to-back events in July. I have nothing
to gain by plugging these events other than to say that this is an
excellent opportunity for the "Destkop Development Community" to gather
outside of your .org and corporate silos.

The DDC (July 17-18) has a good lineup of presentations and concludes
with breakout groups for cross-desktop, cross-distro, and graphics
discussions (http://www.desktopcon.org/2006/schedule.php). Registering
early for DDC will help in finalizing the schedule/breakout agendas.

The OLS (July 19-22) is a core technology conference, targeting software
developers working on the Linux kernel, OS infrastructure, security,
networking, and related research projects. With attendees coming from
over 30 different countries, the Symposium is the single most
comprehensive collection of Linux experts in the world. Topics of
interest to the desktop community include:

   - Docking station support
   - Open source graphic drivers
   - Boot times (kexec, fast fsck, snapshot boot, etc.)
   - Virtualization (not just a server issue)
   - Laptop battery life (power management)
   - Device handling on the desktop
   - Wasteful things that applications do
   - Making applications mobile
   - GL-based composited desktop for Linux
   - Linux Standard Base (LSB)

I am keeping these and other desktop-releated events listed and updated
on the Desktop Linux (DTL) page. Other upcoming events include GUADEC
(in progress), the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, Open Driver Summit,
Desktop Linux ISV Summit, and aKademy 2006.
