I haven't forgotten about the out-of-tree patches, or these ones (3,4,and 5)

I got caught up in a lot of other issues today, and didn't have time
to finish looking at these. 

I did take a look at the tif and glib2 patches, and I think those have
some valuable material, but I need to do a more thorough
review before accepting them.  I'll try to get through them
tomorrow.
