If you use some of the options on older GCC versions, you'll get the same
error, so it would be good to have a way to determine the kind of flags to
use based on the compiler, and even compiler version.
Is it possible, or even desirable? My personal opinion is that almost
everything beats having to revert patches from trunk on every build.
