Sorry to miss the call, but I agree with the conclusion.  ALSA APIs will
not be going away anytime soon and it will be good for the sound server
daemons to be able to count on at least one audio driver API...in this
case ALSA.  As a side benefit, the Java runtimes will have a stable ALSA
API.
