That will be quite a big job. There are quite a few out there.
Many of them are modified from Sun's JRE's, but a few are not,
and are written from scratch to accord with language specs.

They also change: Sun currently have JRE 1.4, JRE 5.0 and JRE
6.0 under maintenance, and issue new patches of them quite
frequently - every month or so. The changes they include get
picked up by various suppliers of JREs and incorporated into
their versions, but the timescales on which this happens vary
widely.

There is also the question of things like graphics toolkits.
There are several of these, and they all use native graphics
at some level, but they vary quite a bit.

Graphics interfaces:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_%28Java%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Widget_Toolkit

I'd recommend starting with Sun's 1.4, 5.0 and 6.0 JREs for
Linux to get an idea of the scope of the problem. Think of it
as a feasibility study.
