actually they weren't really fully put into use: the ability existed, 
but didn't end up being enforced - the LSB chair of the day effectively 
killed it.  Debian and Ubuntu still do follow the model where there are 
dependency packages for major components, and lsb_release reports on the 
versions supported by those, but as nobody else does it's not useful. 
So we didn't really learn anything from it.
