It's also not uncommon for projects to use CNAMEs for irc
networks, if you'd find that useful:

$ host irc.debian.org
irc.debian.org is an alias for irc.geo.oftc.net.
...

$ host irc.ubuntu.com
irc.ubuntu.com is an alias for chat.freenode.net.
...
