When we were having this conversation before, I had the idle thought of
writing a "desktop sendmail" that basically re-implements traditional
email into a desktop service, using libnotify and a "System Notices" UI
strategy.  This would be the zero-config email system that would satify
everyone.

Of course, I've got too much to do already, so it never happened.  Feel
free to "steal" the idea. :-)
