Okay, you convinced me, we're better off leaving that part as is. The tricky
part about the current scheme when your working build directory is also a bzr
branch is that it's fairly easy to check in the copied files without noticing.
Then they become "fixed in time" - this happened once, I noticed we had made
changes to the generic m4 file which was not reflected in the arch-specific
books. Then I had to figure out if there was a reason why the files were
checked in - it's certainly possible that you have intentionally checked in an
arch-specific version if it was supposed to differ from the generic one.
However, this was just a kind of "dreaming aloud", let's not make the process
more complicated :)
